Sigma SD-50 50th Anniversary Dreadnought with Solid European Spruce top, Solid Cocobolo Back and Sides

Sigma is universally respected here at Merchant City Music for its ability to consistently produce outstanding player’s guitars. It’s very exciting to be stocking this limited edition 50th Anniversary SD-50 model, alongside its SOM-50 sibling. Make no mistake, guitars with this level of build and material quality should cost vastly more than these two beauties do, making them not only collectors pieces but real steals!

For us, the real standout feature has to be the woods, especially that stunning Cocobolo back and sides. Custom guitar builders will tell you that Cocobolo costs many hundreds of pounds as an upgrade, not least because of how difficult it is to work with. Prized for its stunning figuring and tone, Cocobolo is part of the Rosewood family of woods - redder in colour than Indian or Brazilian Rosewood, with balance, power and a tonal complexity all its own.

This tonal foundation is amplified by a European Spruce soundboard, often thought of as the ultimate wood for classical guitars because of its light weight and stiffness, coupled with very pale, even coloration. European Spruce provides a sound rich in overtones, while remaining focused, full of nuance and tonal colour.

These woods are combined here in a traditional square-shouldered dreadnought body. Originally designed to fill a room with sound, the dreadnought body is perhaps one of the most familiar ever produced, favoured by seminal artists in every genre. Great for flat-picking and rich, lush rhythm, this body, combined with these tonewoods, is a tour de force.
